Commentary

In chapter 12 of the Book of Revelation, Michael and his angels fight the dragon, ‘that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan’, and cast him down to earth. Christian art shows him in armour, sword raised, one foot planted on the vanquished demon.

In Paris, Francisque Duret portrayed him in bronze for the Fontaine Saint-Michel, inaugurated in 1860: wings spread, the demon fallen beneath him. The demon has been retained for comparison.
